Finding Satisfaction In Him

“God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.”
– John Piper

My pastor shared the above quote with the congregation recently. How it struck me!

So often, I seek to find satisfaction in things that are fleeting, things that are of this world. I’m continually tempted to look for satisfaction in the approval of others, or in my job performance, or in my husband’s or children’s or friend’s view of me. I seek satisfaction in good things like mothering, volunteering, and this writing work that God has called me to do.

But the fact is, the satisfaction of those things — even the good things — leaks out over time like water poured into a pitcher punctured with holes. It leaks out because in my sin and fallibility I’m a fractured pitcher unable to hold water on my own. More than that, though, I think it leaks out because God didn’t make me to be filled in any lasting way by anything except Him.
Meant to Be Mine
Another fallible woman once had a conversation with Jesus himself about the root of true satisfaction. In John 4, when the Samaritan woman at the well encounters Him, He says to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

A stream of water, poured out generously and with stunning grace by the God of the Universe and all heaven — into her imperfect pitcher. Into mine. Into yours. So long as we turn to Him for it, His supply of satisfaction is without end. Yes, our pitchers will still be broken. It doesn’t matter because His water is more than a match for our leaking holes. He is able… He is the only one who is able… to keep our pitchers filled.

Dissatisfied? Finding your writing unfulfilling? The God who met the Samaritan woman stands ready to minister to you and to me today.
