Angry with God over the death of her active-duty military husband, nurse Aleni Callan finds herself even angrier when war hero, Brice Taylor, arrives in the emergency room with a concussion and hypothermia after participating in the community charity Polar Bear Plunge.

Aleni wants nothing to do with a man who willingly takes chances with his life.

Brice doesn’t understand how God could bring him through being a captive in Iraq, when he’d failed his troops so miserably. Therapeutic writing about his escape results in the accidental best seller The Human Shield, and brings fame he would rather avoid. When he meets widow Aleni Callan, his feelings of failure only increase when it seems that every offer of aid turns into a mess and drives her further away. Her adorable son, Ty, wedges himself into Brice’s broken spirit.

Megan Callan, Aleni’s mother-in-law, with the help of her three-year-old grandson, Ty, scheme to bring Aleni and Brice together. But will misunderstandings and high emotions keep them apart? While the best-laid plans often go awry, Megan isn’t one to accept no from Brice. Megan must dig deep within herself to find answers to questions she has tried to avoid, especially those of faith.

Glaz’s debut novella is an adorable romance that employs her own military experiences, making this story personal and homey, while keeping the tension and stakes high. Her ability to develop a multilayered, multigenerational family helping each other from all sides will charm the reader. A sweet read.

  1. I loved this romance, and Linda really did bring the characters to life. I love Christmas, too, so it was a delightful read for me over the holidays, but I agree with Davalynn–it’s a story for all seasons!

Can’t wait to see more from Linda!
