It’s maggots, murder, and marriage in the latest Bug Man novel, Nick of Time, by Tim Downs.

What girl in her right mind would marry forensic entomologist Nick Polchak, a man whose world consists of maggots and blow flies? How about a girl as weird as he is? Alena Savard is a reclusive dog-trainer who lives in a secluded mountaintop compound with only her dogs for company. Many of the locals refer to her as the Witch of Endor-the small town at the foot of her mountain.

Downs does a great job further developing the character of Nick Polchak and allows us a glimpse into how a man thinks. One difference in this book from the other Bug Man Novels is that Downs tells much of the story from Alena’s point of view.

When Nick disappears two days before their wedding, Alena goes searching for him. The pacing is perfect, and there are enough plot twists to keep you turning page after page. Nick’s witty dialogue and Alena’s wonderful dogs add humor to an otherwise tense situation.

You’ll be surprised at the ending (a twist I never saw coming), yet satisfied and eager to read more Bug Man Novels.
