Since the conference is just around the corner, I thought we should all get in the spirit with a rousing round of conference carols. What? You’ve never sang conference carols before. Well, that’s okay because I can help with that. Here’s one for you to practice with.

The Twelve Days of Revision*

On the first day of revisions my editor gave to me an apostrophe pluralization

On the second day of revisions my editor gave to me two redundancies

On the third day of revisions my editor gave to me three too many “thats”

On the fourth day of revisions my editor gave to me four weasel words

On the fifth day of revisions my editor gave to me five passive verbs

On the sixth day of revisions my editor gave to me six run on sentences

On the seventh day of revisions my editor gave to me seven misplaced commas

On the eighth day of revisions my editor gave to me eight telling paragraphs

On the ninth day of revisions my editor gave to me nine gaping plot holes

On the tenth day of revisions my editor gave to me ten head hops

On the eleventh day of revisions my editor gave to me eleven tense shifts

On the twelfth day or revisions my editor gave to me twelve hanging participles

Merry Conference and Happy Editing!

  1. I don’t need no darn revisions,
my work’s perfect, out the gate,
    so editor, make the decision,
’cause I ain’t gonna stand and wait.
There’s someone else out there to see
the genius, yeah, with which I write,
and how I plumb Creation’s mystery
with words that ring like dynamite.
Take it or leave it, my job’s done,
and I’ll move on to other things,
so get to sellin’ (have you begun?)
and I’ll send along what’s in the wings.
You’re luckily included in God’s plan
for the writing rise of a humble man.

  2. Andrew, your comment is perfect! Thank you for sharing your poetic beauty with us. I’ve visited your blog several times and love the beauty of your words, while hating the pain and suffering you’re going through. I admire the desire to live your moments fulling. It inspires me to do the same.
