How did it get to be October already? Honestly! Is it me or does the time fly by more quickly as we near the fall? If you can ignore the ominous jingling of bells in the stores and the endless rows of Christmas merchandise, this is the perfect season. Why? Because the weather is crisp, pumpkins are creeping into everything from lattes to english muffins, and it’s the perfect time to cuddle up with a good book. Fall, indeed, is a reader’s/writer’s paradise. See the list below. What would you add?
Readers/Writers Love Fall Because…
1. We are required, by laws of nature and science, to stay warm and cozy indoors. Fleecy clothing is absolutely acceptable, and staying in one’s slippers all day is not lazy but smart lounging! Here in Northern, California, we are completely paralyzed if the weather dips below thirty degrees. We’re talking end of times stuff here. Unable to function outdoors in such severe climes, we burrow down inside. Perfect! With a book at my hand and my keyboard on my lap, I can while away a cozy day in front of the fireplace, can’t you?
2. It’s important to keep your calorie count up to fend off the chill, so robust snacks are in order. Homemade applesauce, gingerbread and pumpkin pie beg to be eaten in between chapters. I, for one, am a proponent of pumpkin pie for breakfast. It has eggs, you know, and milk, I think, and I’m pretty sure that a pumpkin is a vegetable. Or is it a fruit? Elastic waistbands are my friends, bulky sweatshirts, my solace. Bring it on, fall treats! I’ll dig out that Fitbit in the spring, I promise.
3. We’re losing daylight people! Daylight Savings notwithstanding, it gets dark early now doesn’t it? No longer are we out for after dinner walks in the sunshine, or those twilight swimming pool visits. Nope, these long hours of darkness are made for only one thing. Books! Whether you’re writing them or reading them (or both), fall is made for readers.
Enjoy this wonderful season, friends! And now, I’m off to bundle up with my book!
